Questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Tonecut reads the video, cuts the audio and encodes the file inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works with private videos.
Which video files work?
MP4 and MOV files from phones and cameras work in every modern browser. WebM works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. You can also load audio files such as M4A, MP3 and WAV. If a file won’t load, it may have no sound track or use a codec your browser can’t read; try Chrome or Safari.
How long can a ringtone be?
iPhone ringtones must be under 30 seconds, so Tonecut limits ringtones to 29.5 seconds. MP3 audio can be any length.
Why did I get an MP3 when I chose iPhone ringtone?
Making an .m4r needs an AAC encoder in your browser, and Tonecut plays back every .m4r it makes to check it works. If your browser has no AAC encoder or the check fails, you get an MP3 instead, which you can turn into a ringtone with GarageBand. See the iPhone guide.
Which quality should I pick?
192 kbps sounds good for almost everything. Use 128 kbps for speech or smaller files, and 256 or 320 kbps for music you want to keep. A higher setting can’t add detail the video’s sound didn’t have.
Can it handle long videos?
Yes, within your device’s memory. Videos up to an hour work on most computers; on phones, very long videos can run out of memory. If that happens, trim the video first or use a computer.
